‘TIS THE SEASON FOR SUMMER READIN’

5/10/2018

Summer is one of our favorite times of the year. Not only do we get to spend more time reading, students and staff members are asking us for reading recommendations. Whether you are looking for a reading contest or a book list, we have compiled some suggestions that can be used for a variety of readers.

Reading Lists
  • The Great American Read - PBS is gearing up for the first ever national vote for America’s favorite fiction book!! This eight-part TV series will premiere on May 22 and showcase authors, celebrities, and book lovers. PBS has narrowed down the list to the 100 most-loved books. Be a part of the national conversation and be sure to cast your vote for your favorite book!
  • POPSUGAR 2018 Reading Challenge – Looking to broaden the scope of your reading in 2018? Whether you want to transport yourself to a distant country or learn something new about a time period, this challenge will make you grow both as a reader and as a person.
  • Check out our “Give the gift of a book” blog post for details regarding the 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, MU Libraries – University of Missouri, and NPR's Book Concierge book lists.

Reading Contests
  • Antioch and Lakes ILC– Sponsored by the Association of School Library Educators, the  2019 Abe Lincoln Book Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for pleasure and to become lifelong readers. The list of 20 books includes adult and young adult fiction and nonfiction titles. Both schools challenge their students to read all 20 books to enter our respective Reader Hall of Fame programs. Students are up for the challenge. Are you?
  • Antioch Public Library– They are offering a “Libraries Rock” summer reading program that will run from May 28 to July 31. Earn tickets while you read and be entered in a drawing for prize baskets. Register here.
  • Lake Villa District Library– Let your curiosity lead you this summer! Curiosity 2018 kicks off Monday, June 4, for people of all ages! Babies, toddlers, grade-schoolers, tweens and teens can read (or be read to) for 20 days to get a Curiosity Kit and a brand-new book to keep! Plus, do fun activities and earn chances to win an amazing prize basket. Adults can read five books, attend any of their programs and earn chances to win prizes. The entire community also is invited to participate in the library’s One Book, One Community program by reading Rob Sloan’s Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore.

Now, we know that some of you just love the feel of a print book in your hands. We do, too! But, sometimes, we like the convenience of ebooks, especially when we are traveling or waiting for an appointment. Both ILCs subscribe to the Axis 360 digital media library, which is free for all students and staff members. Check out our Axis 360 blog post for details or see one of the ILC staff members for help.

Happy reading,

Barb and Kellie
