Don’t be opposed to Opposing Viewpoints

A webinar recently reminded me about how handy the online resource Opposing Viewpoints in Context is for students researching many sides of a contemporary controversial issue—offshore drilling, organic food, the federal budget deficit, etc. It’s a one-stop-shop for a wealth of credible sources.
  • News articles, video clips, and sound bites
  • Magazine articles
  • Professional journal articles
  • Websites

Recently, some English IV teachers encouraged students to use it for a paper about bioethics—a follow-up to their summer read The Adoration of Jenna Fox. Here’s what they had to say:

Ashleigh Malec
: “My students found it very easy to browse. They were also able to find a logical counterargument that really made them think about how they should disprove it.”

Debra Hanlon
: “The best parts are that the articles are sound, the sources are credible, and the MLA citations are already done! The students REALLY appreciate the fact that they don’t have to sift through unrelated or sketchy documents. AND, they LOVE the complete citations in MLA format!”

Some other quick notes about Opposing Viewpoints in Context:
  • Offers a quick copy and paste solution for students who need the correctly formatted MLA or APA citation for their Works Cited or Reference List.
  • As a teacher, you can compile a reading list to share with your students. Too busy? I can put something together for you. Happy to.
  • Helpful to ESL and special education students, it will read text aloud to the student and highlight the text as it is being read.
