Guest post by Antioch Public Library Assistant Director/Adult Services Librarian Amy Blue.

As Antioch community members, you have access to a wealth of resources through the Antioch Public Library District. While the library provides physical materials such as books and DVDs, they also have extensive online research tools and downloadable content that can be accessed 24/7.

Some highlights for research include:
  • Full text access to the Chicago Tribune from 1985 to the present.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library provides access to hundreds of full-text specialty encyclopedias on a range of topics relating to social sciences, humanities and more.
Some learning resources include:
  • Brainfuse provides free, live online tutoring from the hours of 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily.  The tutors are certified teachers who cover a range of subjects and grades from kindergarten through high school.
  • Transparent Language offers interactive, in-depth learning of over 100 languages.
Downloadable content:
  • Freegal makes available 5 free songs per week to download and keep from their extensive catalog of music.
  • Hoopla offers access to e-books, e-audiobooks, tv shows, movies and comics; Items are never checked out, but monthly downloads are limited.
  • MyMediaMall provides access to  e-book and e-audiobooks; the range of titles here is different than those offered by Hoopla.
To make use of these valuable resources, all you need is a valid APLD library card! Teachers living in a different town are eligible too!  Details can be found in this earlier APL blog post.
