The requests came nonstop the first few weeks of school. Nearly every Lakes football player who visited the ILC wanted to get his hands on one of our two copies of Tony Dungy’sUncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance. Our hold list grew. One student preferred not to be added to the list, but he continued to ask about the title two months into the year, hoping for a stroke of good luck each time he wandered in for a new SSR book. Why the hype? Because Lakes football head coach Luke Mertens framed his team’s 2014 season around the messages the former Indianapolis Colts coach lays out in his book about living a life of significance. It goes to show you how much of an influence teachers and coaches can have over their students to read.

Car and Driver, Cooking Light, ESPN, People, and Time. Ahh, I can visualize it now. The snow is coming down. The wind is howling and it’s bitterly cold. But, I am barely aware of the storm because I’m getting lost in a world of stories. Revealing interviews. Cooking tips. Investigative reports. Whatever my mood, wherever I am, there’s a digital magazine to match.
With the upcoming holidays, I was looking for a magazine service as a potential gift idea. I found one vendor that stood out above the rest--Next Issue. Here’s two places you should visit if you need a book recommendation. They’re fun. They’re fast. And they work.
Need a quick bell ringer idea? Check out these two news resources, which social studies teacher Jaclyn Orlov and a few others are already using successfully in their classes.
As Antioch enters its centennial year, we have cause to reflect on how things were done in the past, present and future. Over the years, we have been able to build up our collection to over 20,000 items. While impressive for a school our size, the real question is whether or not the collection meets our current curricular needs.
How many website bookmarks do you have? Like, 3,892? Here’s a new way to keep them organized: Symbaloo. This free service allows you to create multiple tabs, called “webmixes,” where you can build tiles to represent each of your bookmarks. It’s easy and <gasp> fun! Watch this one-minute video for a brief overview.
A couple of years ago, I received an email from Jim McKay to locate some education articles for an upcoming meeting he was having—in two hours!! Of course, I promptly stopped what I was doing to locate his articles. I thought to myself, how hard could it be?? I knew that our student databases wouldn’t provide the articles he needed. Yet, I also knew I had the ERIC database up my sleeve. As I started to search, I discovered I could not have been more wrong….
I learned about Goodreads.com about three weeks ago, when English teacher Vicki Heilig asked me if I’d include some discussion about the tool during book talks with her freshman and senior English classes. I set up an account and played around in the social media site to prepare to demonstrate to the students all of its features and how they might use it as a resource. I was hooked! It reminded me of the addiction I experienced when I signed up for Facebook about ten years ago. Everything is so much more fun when you do it as part of a community!
Other than the now defunct Google Reader, I had never heard of a blog reader service until a couple of weeks ago when my School Librarianship instructor at Illinois State University required me to sign up for one. I’ve been introduced to a whole new world!
Do you remember where you were when Elvis died? (Yes, I believe I am dating myself.) I was returning to the family farm from an evening out roller skating with friends. When the news came over the radio, everyone in the car was silent. We didn’t know what to say…
Fast forward to 2014, in which the names may be different, but certainly there are notable personalities that have had an impact on us. As we work on our curriculum, biographies are one way we can easily incorporate non-fiction, informational text. |
